Obituary

Edith Evangeline (Van) Reid was called to her eternal rest quietly and peacefully on January 28th, 2026. Van was born on February 4, 1935, in Wilson, North Carolina to the late Oscar and Nora Estelle Artis Reid. Van attended and graduated from Charles H. Darden High School. Those who knew Van would not be surprised to know that she graduated one year ahead of schedule.

Ms. Reid's funeral was held on Thursday, February 5, 2026 at 11 am First Baptist Church of South Richmond, 1501 Decatur St., Richmond, VA 23224. A committal will take place at 12 noon on Friday, February 6, 2026 at Rest Haven Cemetery (1701 LN Forbes Lane, Wilson NC).

Her parents, determined to have their children experience more in life than they did, sent her to college. Van attended Virginia State College in Petersburg, VA, where she graduated in 1955 with a Bachelor of Science degree in business. Van went on to obtain her Master's Degree from Virginia Commonwealth University in 1972. After graduating from Virginia State, Van worked for Chesterfield County Public Schools as a business teacher at Carver High School. She later went on to serve as a Guidance Counselor at Falling Creek Middle School.

During her college and career years, Van made many life-long friends. She helped hundreds of students with their future career and academic choices. She was firm and had a "no-nonsense" demeanor. However, beneath that exterior was a caring educator who cared deeply for the students, parents and colleagues with whom she interacted.

Van joined First Baptist Church, South Richmond in 1973 under the leadership of Rev. Dr. Dwight C. Jones. She was
a faithful member until she experienced health issues.

Van enjoyed exploring her creativity. She loved macramé and also had a deep appreciation for art and decorating. She was an avid sports fan and also loved to read and express her thoughts and opinions in "good old friendly
debates".

Van was predeceased by her parents, 4 brothers and 3 sisters. Left to cherish her memory are her brother Marion
Eugene Reid of Pittsburgh, PA, her sister Dianna Connor (Kenneth Sr.) of Harrisburg, PA, Debra Farmer a very special
friend and companion, and several nieces, nephews and cherished friends.
